In the North Kivu region, the lack of infrastructure for access to electricity and drinking water made daily life a struggle for the local communities in NZULO. Households relied primarily on untreated water from Lake Kivu, which was at high risk of contamination and linked to an increased prevalence of infectious diseases.
Imagine these mothers, walking under the scorching sun, carrying heavy loads, to bring back water that, in the end, could harm their children’s health. Nzulo faced constant health risks due to the lack of access to a reliable source of drinking water.
Deployed Infrastructure
As part of a partnership between MSF Netherlands and GoShop Energy, a sustainable and self-sufficient solution was designed and deployed to address these challenges.
The project included the installation of a solar-powered water pumping and purification station, enabling operation independent of any electrical grid.
The system includes:
30 450-watt panels,
An 8.3-kilowatt pump,
A 7-kilowatt hybrid controller,
A 20-kilowatt frequency filter,
An automatic water chlorination system,
Results
Since its commissioning on December 18, 2025
- 8,500 households now have access to drinking water,
- Each household receives 6 water containers per day,
- The burden of water collection has been reduced,
- The risk of exposure to diseases and infections for women has decreased
This project contributes to improving living conditions within communities. However, access to drinking water thus becomes an essential driver of health and development for unserved regions in the DRC.
