Electrification of the Mangembo Hospital in the DRC

Learn how access to electricity has been improved through solar power at Mangembo Hospital in the DRC. A project led by GoShop and Énergie Assistance aims to ensure safe childbirth 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and to improve healthcare for a population of 950,000 residents.

For a long time in Mangembo, a town located in the province of Kongo Central (formerly Bas-Congo) in the DRC. Known for its hospital, located in the bush, about 400 km from Kinshasa, in an enclave on the other side of the Congo River that serves a population of approximately 950,000 people, operating under extremely precarious conditions. The lack of electricity not only caused discomfort but also posed a threat to life.

From consultations in the dark to surgeries performed under the flickering light of cell phones, and high-risk deliveries, the medical staff faced an alarming situation that endangered both patients and caregivers.

A Tangible Solution for Mangembo Hospital

GoShop provided its technical expertise and solar solutions, while the NGO Énergie Assistance contributed the necessary funding to provide a vital response to this emergency.

This configuration forms the basis of the system, which consists of:

  • A 5 kVA power conversion unit designed to supply power to critical equipment;

  • Equipped with 20 kWh of storage capacity, provided by BYD batteries, it ensures energy independence even during periods of low sunlight;

  • A 5.58 kWp solar array, ensuring a steady energy supply;

Currently, this setup allows the hospital to operate without interruption, including in the evenings and during critical periods.

Impact

“The electrification of the hospital has brought about a profound change and makes us very happy, including the patients. Lighting is a major improvement, as it has put an end to working in the dark and the associated risks, notably allowing women to give birth without complications at any time of day.”

Infirmière

At present, the impacts are tangible, which makes it possible to:

Improved healthcare

Surgeries and consultations are now conducted in optimal conditions, free from the risks associated with using cell phone lights.

Safe childbirth at any time

Women can give birth day or night, without the dangers associated with darkness.

Community revitalization

The hallways remain lively until 11 p.m., and the local community indirectly benefits from this vitality to boost its nighttime activities.

A psychological impact

Light restores hope. Some patients even say they feel better: “Light is already a form of therapy for us.”
