Solar energy as a driver of health at Monvu Hospital in Idjwi

In Idjwi, GoShop has deployed and installed a 21.78 kWp hybrid system with 60 kWh of storage and a 45 kVA power conversion system providing 36 hours of backup power, enabling medical staff to save lives and ensuring patients have the stable power they need, day after day, at the MOVU Hospital.

In the heart of Idjwi Island, DRC, the health of patients at Monvu Hospital was threatened by power cuts. Today, thanks to solar energy, uncertainty has given way to dignity and stability. Indeed, the quest for energy independence is becoming a top priority for many healthcare facilities and structures. Some installations stand out for their power, design, and efficiency.

This is the case with the high-performance hybrid system, based on 12 BYD LV 5.0 batteries, 24 450W solar panels, 36 305W panels, and three 48V/ 15000VA converters, which together provide a total power output of 45 KVA. This system has been installed at Monvu General Hospital in Idjwi, South Kivu, Democratic Republic of Congo, which was regularly faced with power outages, grid overload, and power shortages that threatened the proper functioning of medical equipment and the quality of care provided to patients.

At GoShop Energy, every solution is designed with this in mind: improving the daily lives of its customers in the long term. In fact, to meet the challenge of Monvu General Hospital, three elements were at the heart of the installation:

A robust and reliable storage system:

12 BYD LV 5.0 batteries, offering a total capacity of 60 kWh, store enough energy to cover all of the hospital's needs, including heavy loads at night or during periods of low sunlight;

Conversion power adapted to hospital use:

Three Victron 48V / 15,000 VA converters, with a combined power output of 45 kVA, ensure a stable and continuous power supply to critical equipment;

A photovoltaic field optimized for flexibility and resilience:

The installation combines two types of solar panels to maximize production and improve load distribution:

  • 24 , 450 W panels, providing 10.8 kWp, for high production during peak hours;
  • 36, 305 W panels, adding 10.98 kWp, to boost overall production and better absorb climatic or orientation variations;

In total, this system delivers more than 21 kWp, which is sufficient capacity to power the surgery, operating room, intensive care, laboratory, neonatology, maternity ward, and hospital offices, all of which have extensive energy needs.

Concrete Results

The solar system installed is working very well. Before, the hospital faced frequent power outages and repeated load shedding. Overloads were common and sometimes forced us to extend the power supply to certain departments. In addition to this, the lack of sunlight during the day meant that the batteries could not be recharged properly, forcing us to use the generator. For just a few hours, we consumed around 10 liters of fuel, which represented a significant cost for the hospital.

Today, the system allows us to achieve approximately 36 hours of autonomy. The use of the generator has now been greatly reduced and is only used in the event of several consecutive days without sunshine. This has significantly improved the continuity of the power supply and eased the daily running of the hospital.

Since installation:

  • Zero interruptions in critical care
  • Electrical stability in vital services
  • Peace of mind restored for staff and patients

The Embodiment of Energy Independence

At Monvu Hospital, GoShop Energy's expertise has transformed electrical uncertainty into renewed dignity, providing staff and patients with the stable energy needed to save lives, day after day. This solar installation is a promise kept of fearless nights for mothers in the maternity ward and the guarantee of successful surgical procedures.

The success in Monvu is proof that investing in energy resilience is a vital commitment.
