Energy in Mweso: Where Approximation Becomes a Deadly Danger
At MWESO General Hospital in Masisi, a robust, centralized 135-kVA solar power system equipped with built-in lightning protection now provides a constant and essential power supply for patients and medical staff in this challenging environment. This project exemplifies meticulous engineering in support of an energy transition that takes local realities into account.

In Mweso, in the Masisi territory, a reliable power supply is never a given. For the General Referral Hospital, reliance on costly and unreliable generators offered only a false sense of security; the slightest delay in fuel delivery or mechanical breakdown could throw the entire medical care chain into disarray. In such a context, there is no room for approximation: medical teams are already operating under constant emergency pressure. Continuing down this path meant accepting instability in a place where only patients’ lives matter.
The challenge in Mweso went beyond a simple logistical issue: it was a daily struggle against extreme constraints such as:
- Stress on healthcare workers,
- High exposure to lightning, and
- Infrastructure under constant strain
In light of this situation, the partnership between MSF Hollande and GoShop Energy enabled the development of a solar engineering solution designed to reduce, or even eliminate, the risks facing healthcare workers and patients.
Technical Solution Deployed
We co-developed a robust, centralized, and secure 135 kVA solar solution designed to adapt to the on-the-ground realities in Masisi:
232 450 Wc solar panels installed on structures capable of supporting over 6 tons to withstand extreme weather conditions,
Lightning protection integrated from the design stage, thanks to the addition of Prevectron 3S 60 lightning arresters with a pilot discharge device (PDA), combined with reinforced grounding and comprehensive equipotential bonding,
Construction of a dedicated equipment room, incorporating optimized natural ventilation and intelligent thermal management, to ensure the system’s long-term reliability,
40 BYD 5.0 kWh batteries
9 Quatro 48/15000 inverters, and 4 Rs 450/200 inverters
2 Fronius Eco 27 inverters
Backup power
A 150 kVA Teksan generator providing the primary backup power source when battery charge levels are low. Solar power is the primary source.
This project demonstrates that, with rigorous, context-specific engineering, it is possible to ensure a reliable and vital energy supply even in the most challenging environments.
