Your fuel costs are rising, your batteries seem to be draining faster, and on the surface, nothing seems to have changed. A machine running longer, an air conditioner installed this summer, a pump used more frequently, a routine shifted by two hours that’s all it takes.

The problem isn’t so much the increase itself as the fact that it’s imperceptible. You’re using more energy without really choosing to.

But what’s actually driving your energy consumption, and what can you do once you have that information?

What’s Driving Up Your Energy Consumption

There are several possible explanations for your rising energy consumption, including:

Your appliances are running longer than before

This is the most common and most subtle reason, because it doesn’t involve any purchases. An air conditioner with a capacity of 1.2 kW that runs for three additional hours per day contributes about 110 kWh more per month. A 750-W pump that starts up twice a day doubles its energy consumption. No one “sets” these hours; they simply add up.

Your equipment has grown

A new piece of equipment, an additional air-conditioned room, an expanding business, a freezer installed in the workshop. Each addition is considered in isolation; it’s the combination of them that changes your energy usage curve.

Two or three appliances account for the bulk of the total

This isn’t a growth factor, but it is what determines the extent of that growth. A household or small business generally consumes more energy through appliances such as water heaters, air conditioners, pumps, and refrigeration equipment. The small machines you might first suspect are rarely the biggest energy consumers. Identifying which ones dominate your energy use completely changes the sequence of your actions.

The heart of the problem: you’re flying blind

You only realize your energy consumption has increased once you receive your bill or your batteries run out—by which time it’s too late to take action. In between, you have no information: not which device, not how many hours, and not at what time of day.

This leads to costly decisions. Unnecessary replacement of low-power devices or sizing your solar installations based on vague estimates results in either insufficient battery life or an investment in excess production capacity.

Take stock: a table with three columns

List your main appliances—ten should suffice—and note the following for each:

  • its power rating, as shown on the nameplate or label (in watts);
  • its actual hours of use per day—not what you assume;
  • how essential it is: vital to your daily routine, useful, or simply a matter of comfort.

Multiply the power rating by the hours of use: this will give you a ranking of your energy consumption. In most cases, this will reveal at least one surprise.

Reduce, in the Right Order


Start at the top of the list: Set the air conditioner’s thermostat two degrees higher, turn off the water heater at night, and set the pump to a schedule instead of leaving it running continuously—these three actions make a bigger difference than everything else combined. ​
Shift whatever you can to daytime hours: pumping, ironing, laundry, and recharging devices. With a generator, this makes little difference; with solar power, it changes everything—a kWh consumed while the panels are generating doesn’t go through the batteries, doesn’t wear them out, and costs you nothing.
Only then should you address the smaller issues: forgotten lights, standby modes, clogged filters, and worn-out refrigerant seals. A few kWh per month each: worth addressing, but not a top priority.
Decide whether to replace equipment only after reviewing the energy usage chart—never before. A high-consumption appliance that’s rarely used doesn’t justify an investment; an average appliance that runs constantly often does.

What about solar power?

After improving your habits, solar power becomes a viable solution for meeting ongoing needs, whether for a home, a retail business, or a company. However, never size your system based on a single bill—base it on your actual consumption profile.


By analyzing your daily kWh needs, your peak usage times, and the portion of your consumption that must occur at night, you can precisely determine the required panel power and storage capacity. This preliminary analysis is the only way to avoid the pitfall of an unnecessarily expensive, oversized system or, conversely, an underpowered installation that runs out of power at 9 p.m.
