Masisi: Solar system upgrade at Masisi General Hospital

The Hôpital Général de Masisi, located in the province of Nord-Kivu in the Democratic Republic of Congo, is benefiting from an upgrade of its solar energy system, a project supported by Go Shop Energy. The project aims to meet the hospital's growing energy needs, by improving its capacity to generate, store and distribute electricity, which is essential for guaranteeing quality care in a region where power cuts are frequent.

In the past, the hospital was equipped with a 64 kWp (kilowatt-peak) solar system, with 45 kWh (kilowatt-hour) of storage and 60 kVA (kilovolt-amperes) of power. Although this system enabled the hospital to operate relatively autonomously for some time, the demand for energy increased considerably due to the expansion of hospital services and the introduction of new medical equipment.



The upgrade, carried out by Go Shop Energy, enhanced the system with a production capacity of 74 kWp, improved storage to 90 kWh and a power rating of 60 kVA. This increase will enable the hospital to better meet growing energy needs, ensuring a continuous and stable power supply for medical equipment, lighting, ventilation and other essential services.





Improving the energy system has significant benefits for the hospital and its patients. The existing system was no longer sufficient to meet these new challenges. A stable, reliable power supply means that continuous healthcare can be maintained, with 450 patients benefiting daily from the care provided since the solar system was upgraded, with a reduction in dependence on generators of around 40% with all services running (ultrasound, operating theatre, sterilization, radiology, to name but a few) without interruption, particularly in emergency situations where every minute counts. 

This solar system extension project is also part of a sustainable development approach. By using clean, renewable energy, the Masisi General Hospital is reducing its carbon footprint by 59%, saving an average of 366 liters of diesel per month, and helping to reduce the cost of purchasing external energy. We're also helping to reduce the costs of purchasing external energy,” confirmed Guellord, logistician, and THEOPHILE's managing physician, thus helping to preserve the environment while improving the quality of care. Thanks to this improvement, Masisi General Hospital is becoming a model of sustainable, self-sufficient hospital infrastructure in the region.
