Sustainable development and access to clean energy are major challenges for the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The project to build four mini solar power plants in Wembonyama, in the province of Sankuru, is a concrete example of this. Supported by the Agence nationale d'électrification et des services énergétiques en milieu rural et périurbain (ANSER), in partnership with Go Shop Energy, this project aims to transform access to energy in this long-isolated region.

The project, which has now been completed, installed state-of-the-art solar photovoltaic mini power plants. Each plant has a 270 kWp solar array and a storage capacity of 500 kWh thanks to lithium batteries, ensuring reliable power supply even in low sunlight conditions. In addition, 100 autonomous solar street lamps have been installed to improve public lighting, while two 50 kVA generators guarantee a continuous energy supply.

This initiative has also enabled the installation of a low-voltage distribution network connecting around 1,000 households, considerably improving access to electricity. This initiative has a direct impact on the living conditions of the local population, promoting the development of local infrastructures and creating economic opportunities. Students are able to pursue their learning in better conditions, while hospitals benefit from a stable power supply to treat patients efficiently.

Indeed, the project's four beneficiary sites (ISTM Wembonyama, UPEL Wembonyama, Onalua and Dikungu) were chosen to maximize impact, serving a large part of the local population. The results are already visible: an increase in economic activity, improved safety thanks to street lighting, and testimonials from families now benefiting from electricity for the first time.

This project marks a turning point in rural electrification in the DRC, illustrating the profound impact that a sustainable energy transition can have on local communities. Wembonyama is becoming a model of energy development and an inspiring example for other regions of the country.
